- Glyoxal alters the physico-chemical properties of polymers, e.g. leads to:
- An increase in viscosity of the polymer solutions
- A decrease in water uptake of the polymer
- Similar reaction characteristics as formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde

- High reactivity of towards alcohols and amines and biofunctional nature
