Industrial Applications

Based on our broad technology portfolio, our extensive knowledge and production-"Verbund", we develop new high-performance building blocks and specialty monomers for plastics, plastic additives and coatings used for a variety of industrial applications. Raw materials for detergents, adhesives and construction are other fields of use. These building blocks, tailormade if required, help our customers to generate increased performance and often unique properties in their products.

But we do not stop at developing new building blocks, we also work out new, more efficient synthesis-routes for known products. With our facilities in labs, pilot plants and full scale plants we are in a position to offer our customers a reliable supply of intermediates in all stages, from the launch phase to big commercial volumes.

Life Sciences

We offer a multitude of chiral and achiral molecules for the life science industry. Our product range includes an extensive portfolio of tailor-made chiral amines, alcohols, epoxides and acids (ChiPros®). ChiPros are mainly used for active ingredient synthesis in the pharmaceutical and in the agrochemicals industry. We use asymmetric hydrogenation in addition to biocatalysts in the manufacture of optically active intermediates for life science applications.

We also have one of the most extensive technology platforms for manufacturing achiral specialties. The product range includes specialty amines and a variety of phosgene derivatives. Other important elements of BASF's technology platform are hydrogen cyanide chemistry and the synthesis of heterocycles.

Special Technologies

With our innovative ionic liquid technologies we support our customers in optimizing their processes. Ionic liquids - by definition salts with melting points below 100 °C - offer an unique combination of properties that enable new processes and products. BASF was the first company that used them in a large scale to improve a chemical process. The so-called BasilTM technology has proven to be applicable to a whole variety of chemical transformations. Further commercial applications of ionic liquids are under development in an advanced stage. In addition, under the trade name BasionicsTM we offer a broad portfolio of ionic liquids in bulk quantities - small quantities are distributed by our partner SIGMA-ALDRICH.
