The opening scenes could have been taken from a Sunday night whodunit - impressions of the Ludwigshafen complex underscored with tension-building music. Immediately thereafter Plant Manager Peter Raatz presses the "Action" button. And then it gets really going when he declares: "The Indol plant is one of the most innovative in the Operating Division Intermediates" while taking the elevator all the way to the top of the facility.

"Formic Acid - a real Allrounder"

Bees, airline passengers, oil rig operators and pigs don’t have much in common but there’s one thing they share: they all benefit from formic acid. BASF is the world’s biggest producer of formic acid, although most of it is actually produced by others – by ants themselves. TV-magazine BASF.inside has produced a video report on formic acid.

Basil™ technology relies on ionic liquids

Acids can be quite aggressive – as you will know if you have a bottle of vinegar cleaner in your home. Acids form in many chemical reactions and need to be removed to prevent them from destroying the intended product. BASF’s innovative Basil™ technology offers an elegant way of solving this problem: it uses liquid salts – known as ionic liquids – that act as acid scavengers.
